Kayaking

Kayaking at Whangateau
Today we paddled our sit-on kayaks along the edge of Whangateau Harbour. The pohutukawa trees look stunning with their brilliant red flowers. We have two kayaks available for guests to use FOC which we will transport to the beach or estuary for them to use.

Christmas

Just one more month and Christmas will be here. We have some bookings for our bed & breakfast but there are still plenty of nights available. We are currently working on a new walking brochure so pick one up on your arrival and decide which ones you'd like to explore. The pohutukawa trees are just starting to come out so over the next week or two it will be a spectacular sight.

Mid Week Escape

From mid October and right up until mid December we are having a Mid Week Escape. Details are on the Leighbythesea website. It includes a voucher for the glass bottom boat and entry to the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre.

Spring

Pukeko
At last spring has arrived, the kowhai trees are flowering and birds more active all around. Time to start thinking about summer weekends away and Christmas Holidays.

Whales!

Southern right whale
An exciting time with southern right whales in Omaha Bay. Three years ago we had our first sighting and they're back! Hope they stay around a while and our guests can see them too. Mother and calf have been very close to shore.

Winter Special

Have had a few visitors booked in who took advantage of our winter special for July and August. Visited the Matakana Saturday morning markets where we had a yummy waffle breakfast with coffee and music.

Winter Walks

Leigh is a great place to get away to during winter, with plenty of sunshine hours to explore some of our walks. Omaha Beach has a good boardwalk, alongside the beach, and has numerous carved Maori poles to view on the way. The northern end has good numbers of watched up shells that can be collected.

Wet Day

Plenty to do on a wet day. Visit the Leigh Marine Discovery Centre, the Reptile Park or enjoy a movie at Matakana. A little further away is the Kauri Museum at Matakohe where a few hours is not enough time.

Guest Activities

Recently our guests arrived to participate in an Open Water Dive Course with Goat Island Dive and to go horse riding at Pakiri. Other guests have snorkelled or enjoyed some of the walking tracks. Many have dined at the Sawmill Cafe in Leigh or The Stables in Matakana.

Snorkelling Experience

Locals Carl and Aly
Your hosts also do guided snorkel tours at the Marine Reserve at Goat Island. If you haven't tried snorkelling before then Goat Island is the ideal place to learn. Easy access off the beach. Some of the snapper are huge especially Monkeyface who has been seen here for many years. Available Friday, Saturday and Sunday in April.
All gear is supplied by Goat Island Dive, wetsuit, mask, snorkel and fins, plus we take safety boards for use if needed. By the end of the activity you'll have gained the confidence to snorkel unaided and some of you will have also learnt how to snorkel down to the sea floor and into the fishes realm.
